Galt, the largest of the three, grew up along the Grand River in the 1800s, and its older core is known for stone and brick buildings. Many homes around the downtown and the older residential streets on both sides of the river are well over a century old.

Those homes often have original hardwood, plank subfloors and framing that has settled over a hundred-plus years. Floors slope toward a centre wall or chimney, and rooms that once had wood stoves or radiators have uneven patches.

In Galt, levelling is usually the first job. We check slope room by room, then correct it with shims and sistering under the floor, plywood overlays or self-levelling compound before any new flooring goes down.

Preston and Hespeler have their own historic cores, but much of their housing is post-war and newer. Subdivisions built from the 1950s through the 2010s generally have plywood or OSB subfloors and more consistent framing.
