Tile rarely fails on its own. It cracks because the floor under it bends, it sounds hollow because the thinset didn't cover the back of the tile, and grout crumbles because the wrong grout went into a wet room. Many 1950s and 1960s Kitchener bungalows have diagonal plank subfloors. Tile can't go directly on planks, because each board moves on its own and cracks the grout lines above it.
We add a plywood layer screwed on a tight pattern, then an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter DITRA before setting tile.
Older homes around Victoria Park and Central Frederick often have joists that were notched for plumbing decades ago, or spans that feel bouncy underfoot. Industry deflection limits are stricter for tile than for other floors, and even stricter for natural stone.

Kitchener basement bathrooms and laundry rooms sit on concrete that may be cracked, sloped or damp. We test moisture, grind high spots and use a crack-isolation membrane over hairline cracks so they don't mirror through the tile.
Most of Waterloo Region's tap water comes from groundwater, and it is among the hardest municipal water in Ontario. In showers, entries and laundry rooms, that leaves mineral film on tile and grout over time.
For wet areas, we often recommend a high-performance cementitious grout or a urethane or epoxy grout that resists staining and doesn't need regular sealing. Standard sanded grout still works well in dry rooms if it is sealed.
We also tell you which cleaners to use. Acidic hard-water cleaners can etch some grouts and natural stone.
Large tiles such as 24 by 48 inch porcelain are popular in Kitchener kitchens and open main floors. They look clean, but they need a very flat substrate.
For tiles with any edge 15 inches or longer, industry standards call for flatness within 1/8 inch over 10 feet. Most subfloors need levelling to get there, and we use a levelling clip system during setting to control lippage between tiles.

Replacing floor tile doesn't need a building permit. Moving or adding plumbing fixtures, such as relocating a toilet or adding a basement bathroom, normally does, through the City of Kitchener's Building Division.
If your project includes plumbing changes, your plumber or general contractor usually handles that permit. We schedule the tile once the rough-in has passed inspection.

Usually because the floor under it flexes, or because it was set over a crack in a concrete slab. Proper subfloor stiffening and an uncoupling or crack-isolation membrane prevent most cracking.
Sometimes, if the old tile is flat and fully bonded. It adds height at doorways and toilets, so we usually recommend removing it, especially in bathrooms.
Light foot traffic is usually fine the day after grouting. Heavy furniture and appliances should wait until the grout has cured, typically a few days depending on the product.
