Puslinch Homes Are Bigger, and That Changes the Job
A typical Puslinch custom or country home might have 2,000 to 4,000 square feet of flooring on its main levels, compared with 800 to 1,200 on a subdivision lot. Open-plan kitchens, great rooms and long hallways create continuous floors with few natural breaks.
Those homes also tend to have more stairs, more feature areas such as herringbone entries or bordered dining rooms, and more radiant heating in basements and bathrooms.
Bigger jobs need more planning: material quantities, acclimation space, delivery timing and a crew schedule that runs over several consecutive days. We plan all of that at the measuring stage.
Large Continuous Runs and Expansion Planning
Every floor expands and contracts with the seasons. Over a 12-foot bedroom, that movement is small. Over a 50 or 60 foot open main floor, it adds up.
Floating floors usually need an expansion break, such as a T-moulding, once they pass a certain length, typically 40 to 50 feet depending on the product. We plan those breaks at doorways or natural transitions so they don't interrupt the room visually.
For nail-down solid hardwood in wide rooms, we allow for expansion across the width of the room as well as at the walls. In very large spaces, we often recommend engineered hardwood, which moves less and handles long runs more predictably.
Puslinch Lake and Seasonal Properties
Around Puslinch Lake and in other seasonal homes, heating is often turned down or off for part of the year. That creates bigger temperature and humidity swings than in a home heated year-round.
Solid hardwood struggles in those conditions, gapping in cold, dry months and cupping in humid summers. For seasonal properties, we recommend engineered hardwood with a stable core, rigid-core vinyl plank or porcelain tile.
If a property is heated year-round but lightly, we also discuss keeping a minimum temperature and running a humidifier or dehumidifier to protect the floor.
Custom Builds and Working With Your Contractor
On new custom homes, flooring is one step in a long construction schedule. We work directly with builders and general contractors to fit into that sequence.
That means installing after drywall and HVAC are running, but before final trim and paint. It also means confirming subfloor flatness with the framer, coordinating radiant heating with the heating contractor and scheduling stair treads with the finish carpenter.
We provide WSIB clearance certificates and insurance documents to your builder and can bill directly to the contractor or to you.
